IN pursuance of the "Regulation of Elections Act, 1870," I, John Nxjgknt Wood, Returning Officer for Ihe Electoral District of Mount Benger, do hereby give notice that, by virtue of a Writ bearing . <!nto the seventh, day of February, 1871, under the Public Seal of the Colony, an Election will be held for the return of one qualified person to serve as a Member of the Provincial Council of Otago, for the said Electoral District, and that the nomination of candidates will take place at the Courthouse, Switzers, at noon, on ihe 36th day of March, 1871 ; and that the poll (if necessary) will be taken on tho 23rd day of March, 1871. The influence of a few publicans and storekeepers more than counterbalanced the merely personal in- j fluence of a baud of working miners, ancl I lost. Accordiiig to my promise, in reply to a requisition asking me to become a candidate to rcp-e&ent the Mount Benger vis. trict in the Provincial Council, I ofier my gervices to the electors, and psk for their anpport so far as their views coincide with irry own. (1.) T would have Mr. Vogel's scheme reconsidered, as it affects Otago. (2.) Would like to see extensive tracts of Ij.ikl open j for selection before eithor embarking in railways or in immigration schemes ; (I : would not oppusa the construction of the Olutha Railway.) Will ever advocate the gradual abolition of the gold duty, looking upon it as a partial and unjust tax on labour. (.">.) In conclusion, I would respectfully assure " Sis Justus " that he was mis- j taken in his allusion to me as " Fair j Play." I have not written to any newspaper since I became a candidate. With respect to the other persons who have attacked me under a norn dc plume, I trust that they afford themselves a little gratification by their effusions. I don't intend to answer them. I pray them, however, to leave persons and stick to politics, and, above all, stick to the .truth. Again thanking my supporters, and assuring them that, should I be returned (and I by no means covet a connection with provincial squabbliugs), I will endeavour to remember my promises.
