ELECTORAL DISTRICT OF MOUNT BENGER. IN pursuance of the " Regulation of Elections Act, 1870," I, John Nugent Wood, Returning Officer for the Electoral District of Mount Benger, do hereby give notice that, by virtue of a Writ bearing date the seventh day of February, 1871, under the Public Seal of the Colony, an Election will be held for the return of one qualified person to serve as a Member of the Provincial Council of Otago, for the said Electoral District, and that the nomination of candidates will take place at the Courthouse, Switzers, at noon, on the 16th day of March, 1871 ; and that the poll (if necessary) will be taken on the 23rd day of March, 1871. JOHN NUGENT WOOD, Returning Officer. The following are the polling places for the Electoral District of Mount Benger : — The Courthouse, Switzers. The Courthouse, Roxbuigh. The Schoolhouse, Millers Flcit. The Schoolhouse, Nokomai. Mr. Barberry's House, at Waikaka. Mr. Stevenson's Store, Horseshoe Bend. The House of Mr. James Forbes, Potters Gully. JOHN NUGENT WOOD, Returning Officer. Switzers, February 27, 1871. TO THE ELECTORS OF MOUNT BENGER DISTRICT. n ENTLEMEN,— I sincerely thank those amongst you who registered their votes in my favour. The influence of a few publicans and storekeepers more than counterbalanced the merely personal influence of a band of working miners, and 1 lost. According to my promise, in reply to a requisition asking me to become a candidate to represent the Mount Benger district in the Provincial Council, I offer my services to the electors, and ask for their support so far aa their views coincide with my own. (1.) T would have Mr. Vogcl's scheme reconsidered,asitaffect.jOtago. (2.) Would like to see extensive tracts of land open for selection before either embarking in railways or in immigration schemes ; (I would not oppose the construction of the Olutha Railway.) (3J Think that all centres of population should have ample commonages, and will strive to get them. (4.j Will ever advocate the gradual abolition of the gold dutj r , looking upon it as a partial and unjust iax on labour. (5.) Will be willing to part with our provincial system as soon as I see a well digested scheme to take its place, wherein local government and the local expenditure of our land fund are secured. As a seat in the Provincial Council is a matter of peculiarly local interest, and as the cry has been raised about the Molyneux that Switzars will be my first and only consideration, I can only reiterate the promise I made when last at the Teviot, that the Molyneux watershed shall not be second in my thoughts, and that I shall visit it at least once every session. In conclusion, I would respectfully assure <l Sis Justus " that he was mistaken in his allusion to me as " Fair Play." I have not written to any newspaper since I became a candidate. With respect to the other persons who have attacked me under a nora de plume, I trust that they afford themselves a little gratification by their effusions. I don't intend to answer them. I pray them, however, to leave persons and stick to politics, and, above all, stick to the truth. Again thanking my supporters, and assuring them that, should I be returned (and I by no means covet a connection with provincial squabblings), I will endeavour to remember my promises. I beg to subscribe myself v Your obedient servant J. FRED. DEAN P.S. — Neither my. time nor my purse will permit me to visit the different centres again. — J. F. D. 141 ACRES.
