Tlie nomination of candidates for tlie representation of the Waitahuna District in the Provincial Council, took place at the Courthouse, Waitahuna, on Saturday last, shortly after twelve o'clock. There was but a small attendance. The lieturning Officer, W. L. Simpson, Esq., read the writ and the advertisement, after which he stated it was for those electors present to nominate such persons as they thought fit to act as their representative
Mr. Mark Higgins proposed Mr. George Francis Collins Browne as a fit and proper person to represent the district. Mr. Thomas ft vans seconded. Mr. Joseph Ferris proposed Mr. David Dunn as a fit and proper person. Mr. Hugh Bruce seconded. Mr. Alex. Frazer proposed Mr. Thomas Grundy as a fit and proper person.
Mr. John Oxenbonld seconded,
As there was no other candidate proposed, the Returning Officer asked if anyof the gentlemen nominated had anything to say. Mr. G. F. C. Browne said in appearing here seeking election, he would, detain the electors present a very few moments. He looked upon these nominations as a mere matter of form. He had already addressed the electors on the various matters attracting public attention, and if returned he would always try to carry out those views lie had advocated .
Mr. D. Dunn said, in coming forward as a candidate for election, he considered he was quite right in doing so, as he wished to see something of the spirit of the times introduced into these elections. He had already addressed one meeting of electors, and he would address another meeting in the gully on Monday, when he would be glad to answer any questions that might be asked him. He would do so now, if necessary.
In answer to questions, Mr. Dunn said he was not in favor of free 'immigration. If lie saw an opening for any of his frinds lie would very soon bring'them out. He approved of the present system. of passage warrants. Mr. Higgins asked what Mr. Dunn thought of compensating agricultural leaseholders.
Mr. Dunn said he was nctt at present going to make a political' speech, but lie ■would be glad to answer that question fully at liis meeting on Monday. Mr. Grundy then came forward and said that although he came third on the roll of candidates, he hoped that did not indicate the position lie would occupy on the day of election. He had not intended coming forward, but having been pressed by some friends, he at List agreed to stand. He would have before addressed the electors, but lie did not wish to make his meetings clash with the oilier candidates'. He would, however, take an early opportunity of addressing the electors, when lie would be happy to answer any questions?. Mr. Higgins asked Mr. Grundy if it was a fact', as reported, that lie had thrown over another gentleman who was going to stand. Mr. Grnndy in reply said— Mr. Bayliss wrote asking me if I would give him my support. I answered him that I could not do so, as I was coming forward myself. The Returning Officer said that three gentlemen having been nominated, he would call for a show of hands to know the minrl of tlie electors. The show of hands' resulted as follows — Browne 6 Dunn 5 Grundy - - - - 3 A poll was demanded by Mr. Grundy. The election take 3 place on Saturday, 11 th March. This concluded the business.
