WAITAHUNA.

(From a Correspondent.)

Mrs De Carles was on Friday last convicted of sly grog selling, and fined by Mr Warden Simpson, in the sura of £20 and costs of court.

The annual meeting for the election of a Presbyterian Church Committee for the ensuing year was held on Friday last, when the following gentlemen being the old committee were elected, viz., Messrs Bait, Winning, Auld, Edie, Clark Bnshe, and Dunn. During the last twelvemonths there was collected for various purposes connected with the church, the sum of £90. The advisability of taking steps for obtaining a resident clergyman was considered by the meeting, but to no definite result, the committee being intrusted with the conduct of the matter.

On Saturday night a meeting olf those desirous of forming a volunteer corps was held in the Athenaeum. ,A large numher were present, and a good many kave in their names. The number was 38 ; and on Monday night there was a meeting at Havelock. On Wednesday night there will be a meeting of those enrolled to elect a committee to take the preliminary proceedings to have the corps sworn in. The meeting is to be in the school room, as central to the Havelock and Waitahuna Gully people.

Mr. Menzies delivered a lecture, on Bunyan's " Pilgrims Progress," in aid of the school funds, on Monday night. The attendance was very good, and the proceeds also good.

The Athenaeum Committee have entered into a contract with Mr. Hurst for painting, staining, and varnishing the building without and within, and also for the construction of a large book case, for the sum of £30. The committee also order this week books from the Education Board to the amount of about £20.

The rain has had no beneficial effect on the water supply for mining purposes. Matters have not been so dull here at this season since the opening of the diggings. Harvest is in full opei'ation. The crops are light. Mr. Coombes and party have had thirteen men engaged in widening and deepening their race between the dam and the claim. The Messrs. Hardy received, on Saturday, two waggons load of iron piping for fluming one of the gullies iv the line of their race.
