THE BENGER BURN BLOCK.

(To the Editoi-)

Sir, — It is really amusing to note the vast importance attributed to even the moat trifling actions on the part of some people by certain political quidnuncs. The letter of "Cosmopolite, junr.," in your last issue, is a case in point. That sapient individual ha 3 contrived to magnify into a mountain the very insignificant mole hill, formed by the following circumstances ;— On the 18th

November, Mr. KitcMng personally lodged an application for the 640 acres he is entitled to under the Hundreds Regulation Act, 1869, Amendment Act, 1870, with Mr. Borton, Warden for the Teviot district, but could not obtain the forms of the necessary advertisement. In the "Gazette" of the 30th ult., or twelve days after, Mr. Kitching's application was lodged ; a proclamation, dated the 24th ult., cancelling the lease, over 5000 acres of Mr. Clarke's run, appeared. On the 6th inst., the Warden notified to Mr. KitcMng that he could obtain the necessary forms ; and on the Bth inst., Mr. KitcMng went to the Teviot, got the forms, and would immediately have forwarded the advertisement, had there been any means of doing so. The absurd postal arrangements, which have caused so much inconvenience to the district for the past few months, rendered it impossible that the advertisement should arrive in time for insertion in any number of your journal earlier than your issue of the 15th inst., in wMch it accordingly appeared. The apology, which has so excited your correspondent's ire and suspicion was dictated solely by a love of fair dealing, and a desire that everything in connection with the matter should be patent to the public gaze. — I am, &c, Cosmopolite, senr. Teviot, December 30, 1870.
