STARTLING, IF TRUE.
It is rumoured, we are informed, in Protectionist circles, that Mr. Yogel, encouraged by his success in satisfying many of his fellow colonists of the existence of local exceptions to the first principles of political economy, is now with his usual energy and versatility preparing for the use of New Zealand schools a " Modified Multiplication table " — he has not however yet ascertained, we believe, whether the corresponding deviations hold good in division, especially in long division of money. The use of the Vogelian tables will, it is added, be made compulsory in all schools by a bill, now in the hands of the Colonial law officers. On the same authority, we learn that this unwearied Minister, following Mr. Gladstone's example, is lightening the cares ,&£' office by research. A Valuable paper will be read by- him at an early meeting of th.3 iTew Zealand Institute. " O^i some divergences from the received deductions of Geometry observable in this climate, with remarks on local phenomena, indicating that the law of gravitation may occasionally be suspended in these islands under their existing circumstances." The paper will, it is said, be read during the approaching session at Wellington, ■when, it will be illustrated by a series
of social, political, and economical experiments on a "sensational" scale, more startling than anything hitherto witnessed south of the Equator. Mr. Yogel is said to be ready to take odds, that the National as well as the Colonial debt will be entirely extinguished by the proceeds of the papei* (in pamplet form, ] s), invested as a sinking-fund at 4f per cent. To carry this scheme out in its entirety, however, it will, we learn, be necessary for Mr. Yogel to proceed home as General Colonial Agent, on a salary of at least £2000 per annum.
We trust our Legislature will allow no such trifle to stand between our benefactor and such an object ! — " Nelson Examiner."
