SWITZERS.

(From a Correspondent. )

December 14.

We dwell in rather an isolated locality, and not many events transpire to disturb our quiet, or interfere with us while we pursue the even tenor of our way; but when such event does occur, as Capt. Cuttle would say, we make a note of it.

An amount of excitement was caused last week by Mr. Chapman — the recent pu> chaser of the Hyde Home Station — impounding those horses that had crossed the boundary of the commonage, and charging ten shillings per head. It was thought to be a great hardship to drive the horses away without giving notice, as many of the residents had the privilege allowed them of running their horses by the previous runholder.

Tho Waikaia constituency appears to attract the attention of our wouldbe representatives. It is rumoured that there are five candidates in the field — Messrs. Br.ulshaw, Mervyn, Dean, Barton, and Capt. Baldwin. Mr. Bailey, our law agent, has got up a requisition to Mr. Barton, and is going round with it to get signatures. He endeavours to induce persons to sign it by informing them that it does not bind them to vote for the candidate, but merely to request Mr. Barton to come and address the electors.

Accidents h ive been r.ither frequent here of late. A. young man, named Charles M 'Arthur, was very seriously injured by a fall of earth last week, in the same claim in which John Marshall was killed a few weeks ago. He is progressing fa voui ably.

Mr. F. J. Dean has resigned his position as teacher of the Switzers' district school. He has boon in that position for two years, and he appears to have given general satisfaction.

Our Hospit I Committee have had rather heavy demands made on their resources of late, and unless the Government subsidy is forwarded soon, I am informed that the Committee are likely to be in difficulties.
