VOLUNTEERS.

(To the Editor.) Sin, — My young friend, Quickstep, of the f • Awkward Squad " (or, as be prefeip to call it, the " No. 1 Company

of the Soor Dook Volunteers ") in forma me that their Captain delivered the following address in tho schoolroom on a recent occasion. As lam not a member of this honourable company, (and can never hope to be, for the reason mentioned below,) I write to ask if such was the case ; as if so, I must protest against the practice of addressing our volunteers in a foreign language. I am, &c, One Inch Below Standard. CAPTAIN BAGS PS ADDRESS TO THE SOOR DOOK VOLUNTEERS. Chiels wha hae on braxie* fed, Loons wham Bagsy af ten led, Stand straught on eend, keep up y'er head, And glour like me. Noo, mind y'er tae3, and spare thestanes, Keep only ac fit first at ance — Rax up y'er houghs, haud in y'er wames, And hear my speech. Nae doot but some has sneered, and said That we hae been on " soor dook "f fed ; But what o' that? "Soor dook "has made Me big and braw. Ye ken the proverb, auld and true — If ye claw me, so will I you ;—; — Ye ken what bills are coming due, And wha can meet them. Ye ken, I dootna, wha's to thank For ony favours f rae the bank ; Then dinnafail to stand in rank, With me for Captain. Nae want of funds need ye perplex, Like them wha come \vi' boos and becks ; Just gie your bills, and write oot cheques, I'll see them cashed. But sorra fa' the chiels wha sneer At us because we volunteer — Their sauls nae overdraft sail cheer, Nor bills discoontit.
