A DIRGE. *:' ■•.' ~ Life of anguish, void of pleasures, Hagte thee to thy destined goal ; Hence ! ye mem'ries, heart's first treasures ; Come thou winter of the soul. A little while, and all is husht— Asheß to ashes, dust to dust. 11. What is love? A strange delusion, Traitor to the breast it fills, Working but the soul's confusionWooing fondest where it kills. Grave's co-tenants, slimy creatures, Feasting on her form divine, Soon shall lick those pallid features, Fattening on these limbs of mine. Feed the grave's unsated lust— Ashes to ashes, dust to dusb. V. Add another to thy number, Demon Death ; thou ghastly slave, Come thou, take me to my slumber In the cool anil quiet grave. Earth to eai"th's corruptive rust — Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. VL Howl ye night winds, virgils keeping O'er our couch beneath the sod, While we there are calmly sleeping, Gently pillowed on a clod. Crumble wicked, crumble just — Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. vn. Mingle dust, no more to sever Till the light breaks through the gloom : Till the trump shall call us, ever To the life beyond the tomb. Clay to kindred clay is thrust — Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
