LICENSING MEETING OF JUSTICES
(Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., E..M., and Alex. Stewart, Esq., J.P.) Tuesday, 6th Decembee. John Tanton applied for a license for Camp Hotel, Lawrence. Mr. Hayes appeared for the applicant. The police objected to the granting of the license, as the house was not sufficiently in order. It was at present occupied by a druggist. Mr. Hayes said that the painters and others were now at the building, and that Mr. Harrop would leave the premises in a week. Adjourned for fourteen days, at the end of that period they would consider the advisability of granting a license, or otherwise. Hugh M'Cutcheon applied for a license for the Digger's Arms Hotel, Waitahuua. The report of the police was unfavourable, and the house being shut for a considerable period, and moreover the wants of the people being amply supplied by the present holders of licenses, the application was refused. The Bench remarked that although the accommodation offered by the hotelkeepers at "Waitahuna was quite ample in quantity, the quality was anything but up to the mark. Christian Long applied for a transfer of license. As the original license was not produced for indorsation, adjourned for fourteen days. Daniel Hunter applied for a transfer of license to Duncan Beaton. No appearance of applicant. Adjourned for fourteen days. ■"»<*" - "Wong On applied for a General License for his premises now building at Chinese Camp. Mr. M'Coy appeared for Mr. Grooday, Wong On's agent. The police stated that the building was still unfinished, but from appearances, the building would be well suited for an hotel when completed. The Bench remarked that there was a feeling general amongst Eui'opean hotelkeepers against accommodating Chinese. They therefore considered that a license should be granted to the applicant. Adjourned for fourteen days for completion of building.
John 3?ord, Waipori, applied for transference of license to Mr. Humphrey. Police report favourable. Adjourned for fourteen days to produce license for indorsation.
John Johnston, of Waipori, applied through Mr. M'Coy for a General License. The original license having been lost, the application was granted.
