ANNUAL COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

This annual contest for colonial prizes will take place at Auckland, in Auckland, in March, 1871, and will be open to the Armed Constabulary, as well as to Militia, Volunteers, and Cadets. PRIZES. There are ten sets of prizes. The first set include five prizes — Ist. (£40); 2nd* do., (£sl 10s) ; 3rd, two prizes, (£9l 10s.); 4th set, same as first ; sth, same as 2nd ; 6th, six prizes, (£l23)*; 7th, same as Ist ; Bth, same as 2nd ; 9th, all competitors on the winning side shall be presented with a new medium rifle ; the highest scorer on the winning side will receive a silver cup, value £25 ; the highest scorer on the losing side will receive a silver cup, value £10 ; 10th, consolation prizes : eight prizes, £29, The Champion Belt, Gold Medal, and the sum of £50, to be given to the highest aggregate scorei in the Ist, 2nd, 4th, sbh, 6th, 7th and Bth sets colonial prizes - - £50 0 0 2nd highest aggregate scorer 30 0 0 3rd „ „ „ 20 0 0 4th „ „ „ 15 0 0 sth „ „ „ 10 0 0 Total - - £125 0 0 CADET PRIZES. Ist set, five prizes, (£l2 10s) ; 2nd, same as Ist ; 3rd, three prizes, (£10). Cadet Champion Belt, Silver Medal and £10, to be giveu to the highest aggrega+e scorer in the Ist and 3rd sets, or in 2nd and 3rd sets according to respective ages of competitors. CHOICE OP REPRESENTATIVES. The Champion for the year shall be a representative. If the Champion Belt is won two years in succession by the same person, it will become the absolute property of such winner, commencing from the competition held in April, 1870, inclusive. Officers and men of the Militia called out and armed either for actual service or for training and exercise, of the Volunteer Force (and of the Armed Constabulary, who must fire with the long or medium muzzle-loading Enfield rifle), are eligible to become competitors for the Colonial Prizes, subject to the following rules : — Each company of Militia called out and armed either for actual service or training and exercise, each VolunteerCorps, and each division of the Armed Constabulary, shall, by such prelimi nary firing as the officer commanding the company, corps, or division, may appoint, select one representative for every fifteen men or fraction of fifteen, nv»r- t.pn t*»a« o"-^- -to the strength on XU', "■*,; v-.v 1 . . , t th& wn.jpsUti ■:*- . These representatives will meet at such time and place, within the month of December, as the officer commanding the district may appoint, to compete for the choice of District representatives, under the following conditions : — (a). Five shots at each range of 400, 500, 600 yards, (b). Position, 400 yards, kneeling; 500 and 600 yards, any. (c). A trial shot allowed at each range, (d). The highest scorers to be district representatives. (c). No competitor is eligible to be a represantative who does not score 40 points. (£), Toe Government will provide passages, <fee. (as in Rule 1 2) for the three representatives who make the highest scores in their respective districts, (g). Officers commanding districts will, on or before the sth January, 1871, send in to the Inspector of Militia and Volunteers a list of those competitors who are duly qualified, with their respective scores. DISTRICT PRIZES. The sum of £200 is apportioned to the Armed Constabulary, to be fired for under such regulations as may be issued by the Commissioner. In each district prizes to the amount of £46 will be given, in two sets of prizes : — Ist set, six prizes, (£36) ; 2nd, three prizes, (£10). „ The highest scorer" in the first set in each province will receive the medal fer the province ; and the return of such firing must be sent in to the Inspector of Militia and Volunteers not later than the 31st March, 1871. ARTILLERY PRIZES. £3 will be given for each Armstrong gun and 24-pounder howitzer ; each corps to fire on its own ground, the range to be not less than 1,500 yards, the target 6 by 6, six rounds in all to be fired. BREECH-LOADING CARBIJTE PRIZES. Eight prizes, ranging from £10 to £2, and making a total of £50. The highest scorer to receive a silver medal, Bach corps will fire in its own district, under the same conditions and for a like number of prizes as in the breech-loading carbine prizes, except position, which will be any.
