THE PITFALLS OF LAWRENCE.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)

Sir, — I think it high time that the attention of the Municipal Council should be directed to the dangerous condition of some portions of Lawrence, in consequence of the many holes sunk and left open within its bounds. In the direction of Kilmarnock-street the state of matters is positively fearful ; it presents the appearance of a honeycomb. Above the old cemetery a like appearance is presented. The holes are like so many yawning gulfs in which tbe child or the unwary may at any moment disappear. It is but very recently that an accident occurred which might have been fatal but for prompt assistance ; and but for that assistance, there would have been a vacant chair and mourning in one home. This should, without delay, be attended to, and I think it is the_ duty of the Council, as representing the ratepayers, to take immediate act : on in the matter, and have the holes filled upland should they allow mining within the municipal bouudary for the future, a deposit should be taken as an earnest, that when the parties have finished, they will fill up all holes sunk by them. lam satisfied that the ratepayers in general would only be too glad to contribute their moiety to see such a necessary work begun ; and indeed I, for one, will be most willing to do my share of the business. — I am, &c, Ratepayer. Lawrence, November 15.
