BALCLUTHA
(From our Own Correspondent.)
Several attempts were made here in times past to form a volunteer company, and although those efforts had not then the desired effect, they i^ived the way, and now the Clutha \M>lunteers are regularly drilled to the number of about 75. Kaitangata, lneh-c-lutha, and Te llouka have contributed their respected c-dfcfcingents, and the movement; is entered into most heartily iv the woole district.
Our Building Society, formed three months a^o, is steadily progressing, and its funds command spirited an I rapid sales. At the last monthly meeting the bidding was more t!mn usually brisk, and the premiums givon ranged from £1 ss. to £1 15s. I cannot relate much ad^mcement in the Port Molyneux goldheld. T'«ero are about twenty working at the di«rgin^s, and making good wages, but I believe the payable ground is either very limited or exceedingly broken.
From the number of horse teams crossing from Lnvrcnoe lately, I imagine your grain mirket is indifferently supp.ied. Tiiere are more oats jii t'lis distiict than the settlers tliemselve* imagined, and more than they would like to part with at present rates.
