VOLUNTEER MOVEMENT IN TUAPEKA.

On Friday last a largely attended meeting was held in the Tuapeka Athenaeum, for the purpose of organising a volunteer corps. W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., was voted to the chair.

Mr. Simpson explained the object of the meeting. He supposed the war between France and Prussia had excited the chivalrous spirit of the community, and suggested the idea of a volunteer corps. But apart from that, he would strongly recommend the movement to the young men of the district. It afforded an excellent means of athletic amusement, and if it had no other object than that, it would prove a great benefit to those who joined it. Voluntser companies existed in many places of far less importance than Lawrence, and some of them had distinguished themselves as marksmen. He saw no reason why Lawrence should not contribute its quota to the number. Mr. Downes then proposed, and Mr. Humphrey seconded, that the name of the company be " The Tuapeka Volunteer Rifle Company." Mr. Forbes moved as an amendment that the name be " The Tuapeka Volunteer Rifle Rangers." The amendment was seconded, and on a show of hands, was declared carried by a large majority.

A provisional committee, to carry out the preliminary business, was then elected, consisting of Messrs. Simpson, Herbert, Bastings, Forbes, Downes, Buck, and Burns (secretary pro. tern.) The Chairman then intimated that the requisition to His Excellency the Governor, to receive and recognise the company, was now lying on the table for signature, and ho hoped that all who intended joining would come forward and sign it.

Abojt forty gentlemen then signed the requisition, and ten or twelve more have since added their names.

The memorial has been forwarded to Capt. Jones of the Tokomairiro Volunteer Rifle Company, who will forward it to the Governor.

The meeting was a very enthusiastic one, and every indication was given that the Tuapeka Rifle Rangers will be a credit to the district.
