RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, LAWRENCE.

Wednesday, October 12.

Edward Still was charged with having at Waitahuna, on Sunday, the 9th Oct , taken from the persoa of one John Peter Lee the sum of £4. The evidence in this case was not interesting, but conclusive against the accused, who is a shoemaker to trade, and was sometime working in Lawrence. Judgment, six months imprisonment with hard labour in Dunedin gaol. There were six previous convictions recorded against him since 1855 for various offences.

Thursday October 13. (Before the same Magistrate.) J. Smith v. Murphy. — Defendant was charged with having assaulted plaintiff on the afternoon of the 12th inst. He was also charged with using threatening and abusive language. On the first charge he was fined Is. and costs, and on the second 40s. and co"sts. Money paid.

Monday, October 17. (Before the same Magistrate.) Ward v. Mountenay. — Claim, £10 10s , for professional services rendered in the Supreme Court in the case Mountenay v. Adams. No appearance of defendant. Verdict for amount claimed with costs of Court, and professional costs, 21s. I Police v. Ferguson. — For allowing a horse, his property, to stray within the Municipality. Being the first offence, fined Is. and costs. Same v. Bennett. — Same offence, and similarly dealt with. Inspector of Nuisances v. Dr. Halley and D. J. M 'Donald, trustees in Griffin's estate. — For allowing stagnant and filthy water to accumulate on property belonging to the trust estate in Ross Place. Mr. Copland appeared for the trustees, and stated that they were waiting for deeds from Dunedin to enable them to sell the properly, the trust estate had no funds. At the urgent request of Mr. Copland one month was given to abate the nuisance. The cases M'Rae v. Fraser and Fraser v. M'Rae were adjourned till Thursday.
