The colony was fairly taken by storm on receipt of the war news, and the German colonists throughout Australia were jubilant everywhere. Little has been talked of since, and the receipt of the mail is anxiously awaited.
Raw lings, the defaulting Honorary Treasurer of the Royal Society, has been expelled, and struck off the roll of magistrates.
Frederick Cope, charged with embezzling Government moneys, has been acquitted. His case excited commiseration, as he bad filled several offices, and kept nineteen sets of books, in none of which an irregularity occurred. He only received =£4 weekly.
A dreadful murder has been committed at Crooked River. A miner named Seers cut his mate's head off. The victim was named August Zepsar. The murderer burned the head, and buried the trunk. Seers has been arrested, and is believed to be insane.
The Alhambra has returned from Fiji, and reports favourably of matters there.
The Duke of Edinburgh is expected to visit Melbourne to witness the races next month.
Croydon is first favourite for the Cup, and Florence for the Derby.
Berloivitz has been sentenced to eleven months' imprisonment for fraudulent insolvency.
Schiiffer, the German traveller, has been admitted into the Benevolent Asylum.
Thame and Walker, of Sydney, with Hopkins, their sly distiller, have been committed for trial for defrauding the revenue. Their estate has gone into the Insolvent Court. Their liabilities exceed LIOO,OOO.
Quartz reefs in South Australia are looking up. In the new company, next the G-erman Eeef, shares were subscribed for in a few hours.
Business Las been very dull. Flour and grain remain at last week's quotations. Brandy is firm ; candles have risen, and Nevas are selling at Is and upwards. Blasting powder is firm, at Bd.
