BIRTHS, DEATHS, AND MARRIAGES.

The total number of biiths registered in New Zealand during the year ISO'J was 9,718, — viz., 4,875 males, and 4,843 females. The total in 1868 was 9,391,— viz., 4,766 males, and 4,625 females. The increase in 1869 was therefore 317, — viz., 109 males and 218 females. The returns, it will be remembered, show, not the births which have actually occurred, but the births which have been registered during the specified periods. The total nu tuber of deaths registered in 1869 was 2,723, viz., 1,683 males, and 1,038 females. The total in 1868 was 2,662, viz., 1,631 males, and 1,031 females. There appears, therefore, in 1869, as compared with 1868, an in crease of 59, viz., 52 males and 7 females. Of the deaths in 1869,-957 (viz., 526 males, and 431 females,) were under one year of age ; 209 (viz., 108 males, and 101 females,) one and under two years ; 152 (viz., 87 males, and 65 females,) two and nnder five years ; — making a total of 1,318 (viz., 721 males, and 597 females,) or 48-43 per cent, of the whole, under five years. The general total of deaths includes 136 (viz., 124 males and 12 females,) or 4*99 per cent, of the whole, from drowning ; and 188 (viz., 159 males, and 29 females,) or 6-99 per cent, of the whole, from various other external causes ; — making a total of 324 (viz , 283 males, and 41 females,) from such causes, being 11-99 per cent of the deaths during the year. In 1869 there was one birth to every twenty-three, and one death to every eighty-five persons living. The average for the ten years, is one birth to every twenty-four, and one death to every seventy-five persons. The excess of births over deaths in 1859 was 6,997, viz., 3,192 males, and 3,805 females. The total excess of registered births over registered deaths in the fifteen years included in these tables was 52,003, viz., 24,241 males, I and 27,753 females. ' The total number of marriages in New Zealand in 1863 was 1,931, being 154 less than in 1868. Of these, 1,766 were by ministers of religion, and 165 by registrars. The respective numbers solemnized by ministers of the several religious bodies were as follow : — United Church of England and Irei land, 508 ; Church of Scotland, Free Church of Scotland, Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland, and Presbyterian Congregations, 629 ; Roman Catholic Church, 311; Wesleyan Methodists, 190 ; Congregational Independents, 49 ; Baptises, 38 Primitive Methodists, 23 ; Lutheran Church, 4 ; Hebrew C Higregations, 3 ; United Methodist Free Churches, 8 ; and Christian Brethren, 7. TRADE ANB INTERCHANGE. The information relating to shipping occupies eight tables. The first two show the numbars tonnage, and crows of vessel? entered inwards and cleared outwards at the several ports of New Zealand during the year 1869. The total inwards was 764 vessels, of 250,731 tonnage, being a decrease, as comp-ired with 1868, of 87 in the number of vessels, and of 26,374 in the tonnage. The total outw rds was 771 vessels, of 247,764 tonnage, being a decrease, as com pared with 1868, of 102 in the number of vessels, and of 39,946 in the tonnage. The two following tables show the "Nationality " of the vessels, inwards and outwards. Of the 764 vessels inwards, 119, of 72,640 tonuage, were British; 534, of 155,303, tonnage, Colonial; 41, of J 5,332 tonnage, American ; 8, of 2,762 tonnage, Norwegian ; 5, of 1,724 tonnage, French ; 3, of 880 tonnage, German ; 2, of 685 tonnage, Dutch ; and 2. of 1,405 tonnage, Russian. Of the 771 vessels outwards, ILO, of 67,839 tonnage, were British ; 604, of 159,054 tonnage, Colonial; 33, of 12,716 tonnage, American ; 8, of 2,886 tonnage, Norwegian ; 7, of 1,933 tonnage, French ; 4, of 1,149 tonnage, German; 2, of 522 tonnage, Dutch ; 2, of 1,403 tonnage, Russian ; and 1, of 259 tonnage, Chiliau. A comparison of the total value of imports in 1868 and 1869 according to the countries whence they were received gives the following results : — United Kingdom, 1863, £2,299,689; 1869, £2,4sß,s79— increase, £L 53,890. British Colonies, 1868, £2,351,685; 1869, £2,2Bo,l3s— decrease, £71,550. Foreign States, 1833, £331,374; 1869, £237,412— decrease, £93,962. Totals —1868, £4,935,743 ; 1869, £4,976,126 —decrease, £9,622. The total value of the exports from New Zealand in 1869 was £4,224,860, against £4,429,193 in 1863, being a decrease in 1869 of £201,333, or 46 1 per cent. Excluding the value of imported goods re-exported from the colony, the total value of exports of New Zealand produce and manufactures in 1869 amounted to £4,090,134, against £4,283,762 in 1868, being a decrease of £178,623, or 418 per cent. The two very important exports — gold and wool — demand more particular notice here. The total value of the gold exported from New Zealand in 1869 was £2,362,995, produced by the several goldfields to the following amounts, viz,, Auckland, £135,637; Nelson, (including Westland N0rth), £323,872 ; Marlborough, £2,631; County of Westland, £687,3 16 ; O ta^o, £ 332,264 ; and Southland, £11,192. 1863 was £2,504,326: There appears therefore a net decrease in 1369, amounting to £141,331. The falling off in amount occurred in .Nelson, VVeatland (South), Otago, and Southland, while in Auckland and Marlborough there was an increase. The total quantity of wool exported in 1869 was 27,765,636ib5., against; 2d,870,1631b5. in 1863, being a decrease of 1,109,527ib5. Tne total value stated for 1869 was £1,371,230, against £1,516,543 in 1868, showing a decrease of £145.318, or 958 per cent. SEVEN T7E OF THE COLONY. The customs revenue in 1889 amounted to £823,503, agaiust £788,829 in IS6S, being an increase of £34,679, or 439 per cent. The total ordinary revenue in 1869 amounted to £1,025,516, against £1,195 : 512 in IS6B, being a decrease of £169,998. Tne total territorial revenue in 1869 amounted to £382,070, against £425,323 in 1868, being a decrease of £43,253. POST OFFICE. The total numbers of letters received in New Zealand during the year 1868, were, — From places without the colony, 482,629, against 532,636 in 1868 ; and from places within the colony, 2,159,906, against 2,070,441 in 1863 ; making a general total of 2,642 535, against 2,603,077 in 1868, being an increase of 39,458. Ttie total number ot letters despatched were. — To places without the colony, 477,375, against 506,395 in 1861 ; and to places within the colony, 1,896,635, against 1,867,727 in 1863 ; making a general tot.il of 2,374,060, agaiust 2,374,122 in 1868, being a decrease of 62. The total numbers of newspapers received in 1869, were, — From pi .ices without the colony, 1,098,469, against 1,005,733 in 1868; and from places within fie colony, 973,423, against 901,576 in 1868; making a general total of 2,076,892, against 1 907,302 in 1863, being an increase of 160,533. The total numbers of newspapers despatched were, — To places without the colony, 405,047, against 363,407 ; and to places within the colony, 1,031.238, against 1,012,909; making a general total of 1,436,255, against 1,376,3 L 6 in 1868, be'uvj; an increase of 109,939. The postal revenue in the several provinces for each year from 1553 to to 1869 inclusive is shown in a comparative table. At tfie close of the year 186.0, the number of Post Office -Savings Banks iv ths colony was fifty-nine, being an increase of four, as compared with L 863. Of these thirteen were in the province of Auckland ; one in the province of Taranaki ; three in the province of liawko's Bay ; three in tho province of Wellington ; four in the province of Mirlborough; five in the province of Nelson ; seven in the province of Canterbury ; three in toe county of "Westland ; seventeen in tho province of Otago ; and three in the * province of Southland. "Within the year, 3,839 new accounts were opened, and the cotal deposits, (including additions to open accounts), amounted to £2 10,898 ss. 9d. The totnl amount of principal withdrawn during tho year was £179,599 10s. 6d. Taking into account the whole period, from the commencement of the svatem in 1837 to the 31st December 1839. there remained on t'ne latter date, including principal and interest, a total balance to the credit of depositors amounting to £231,310 18s. The number of savings banks other than those connected with the postoffice was ten. The total number of persons having deposits in these banks on the 31st December, 1889, was 3,813 (of whom 29 were Maoris). The total deposits during the year amounted to £58,730 Us. 6d. ; and the total of the sums withdrawn to £53,031 os. 4d. The total amount to the credit of depositors at the end of the year was £89,073 17s. 3d. Taking both classes of savings banks together, there was on the 3 Lst December, 1869, an aggregate amount of £320,334 15s. 3d. to the credit of depository TELEGRAPH LINES. The table containing information respecting the telegraph lines in the colony shows the names of the stations, which in December 1869 numbered 52, being four more than in December, 1868; the number of miles of lines, which was 1,611, being 140 more than in 1868 ; the^ number of miles of wire, which was 2,777, being 140 more than in 1868; the numbers of telegrams (distinguishing the private and the government telegrams), the aggregate of which in 1869 was 173,746, against 134,647 iv 1863, being an increase of 39,099; and the cash revenue (of private telegrams), with the cash value (of Government telegrams), the totals of these taken together being £32,610 03. lid, against £26,224 lQs, in 1333.
