The Tuapeka Times. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 1870. "Measures, not Men." LOCAL AND GENERAL.
There are 250 men at work forming the new road between Tokoinairiro and Waitahuna. Our Court report of the case Inspector of Sheep v. W. Miller is unavoidably held over. Mass will be held in the R. C. Chapel on Sunday next, and the Eev. Father Maloney will preach in the evening. The English mail via San Francisco was due at Auckland on the 3rd instant, but no telegram has yet reached us of its arrival. At the usual meeting of the "Waste Lands Board, held on "Wednesday last, the plan of the Presbyterian Church Manse site, Alexandra, was approved of. It will be observed from advertisement that Mr. M'Clusky is selling off his entire stock of goods. We understand he purposes devoting his attention to the Happy Valley Faun. On Friday last, Mr. Hay sold by public auction the claim known as the Blue Spur Sluicing Company. The claim and plant were purchased by Mr. Ernest Peterson for the sum of £920. To-night is the last night of the Athenaeum Readings. "We were shown the programme, and can testify to its excellence. There will be a dance afterwards, and we trust there will be a good turn out. It will be observed from advertisements that all the property lately in the possession of Major Croker will be disposed of by public auction in Mr. Hay's sale room, Ross Place, on Saturday, the 24th instant. It will be seen by advertisement in another column that the Rev. Father Maloney will deliver a lecture in the Athenceum, Lawrence, on Monday, the 19fch inst., in aid of the funds of a new Catholic Chapel. The reveiend gentleman also lectures at Waipori on Tuesday evening. THOSE talented artists Messrs. Nicholas Bros, purpose visiting Waipori next week. From the great success they have met elsewhere, and the excellence of their work, we have no doubt the inhabitants of Waipori will appreciate them by taking advantage of their visit, and obtain fir3t-class portraits, They only intend remaining there a few days. We are glad to hear that the erection of a church for the Church of England congregation is to be immediately proceeded with. The efforts of the congregation in the prosecution of this much-needed work will, we trust, be warmly supported by the general public. It is quite time that a church, numbering so many as the Episcopalians do hereabouts, should be possessed of a suitable church. Mr. John Hutchinson, of the Blue Spur, has bold out his share In the Great Extended Claim for £650, and a one-eight share in Morrison and Co.'s water-race for £500. Mr. Cormack bought the share in the race, and Messrs. D. M'lntosh and Barclay the share in the claim. We regret to learn that Mr. Hutchinson's delicate health has induced him to entertain serious thoughts of going tv a milder climate, and this has caused him to part with his valuable property. Mr. Hutchinson is one of those gentlemen that we can ill spare from our midst.
Total abstinence seems to be the order c the day. It will be seen from our advertisir; columns that a meeting will be held in the Schoolhouse, Blue Spur, to-morrow, Friday evening. An inquest was held in Johnson's Biid c "- Hotel, Waipori, on Monday, before TF. L Simpson, Esq., coroner, on the body of Margaret Johnson, aged 20 months, daughter of Mr John Johnson, who met her death hy drowning From the evidence it seems that she, aio 1)'1 )' with other children, were amusing themseli * by throwing stones into the Waipori river, ne to Wright's slaughter yard. The child wa* <r the act of throwing a very large stone into ttt«river, and, overbalancing herself, fell into i 'ie river after it. There was a steep bank at tho place where she fell in, so that the other chi' . ren could not help the poor little thing, Pi.:she was carried slowly down the river, follov o-l by a little boy aged six years called Smirh. When about 50 yards from the spot where the child fell in, the little boy managed to ca hold of her clothes and pulled her out. . i life was extinct. The jury returned a vei ;•<. of "Accidentally drowned," but wished it ■•• pressed that the boy Smith displayed f'vi courage and presence of mind in pulling Tin deceased out of the water. The Havclock Christy Minstrels acqui <■> themselves splendidly in their entertaini . . given at the Bridge Hotel, Havelock, on Fr. ' evening List. Coghill's Ass"mbly Room -• crowded to overflowing. Mr. Busst opened t ' entertainment by reading an admirable - * logue. The company entered with be spirit into their various parts than is cennv' amongst awatenis. Mr, Devonshire as T< <\^ , and G.J.R. as Bones, were particularly hr !>;>•» in their respective parts— more like pr< * sionals than amateurs. Dr. Johnson sang ' ' i « kiud to thy father " with great taste, and " t Cook's "Upin a balloon " was first-class. V . Busst and the other gentlemen of the comr > i v acquitted themselves well. The entertainm ■ it, which was for the benefit of the Tuapeka 1 ■ - pital, will prove a valuable assistance to a n, - valuable institution. On behalf of the He • i tal Committee, Mr. Simpson, R.M., thaiv ' the Minstrels and the audience for their k. . '- ness in so liberally contributing to the supj ■■ of an institution which it must be the desir •£ all to see well supported. After the prognm . was finished, the hall was cleared for dane i ,. which was kept up with unusual spirit till cL\ light in the morning.
