DALHOUSIE.

(From a Corresjjondent.)

As Artemus Ward says, "We are moving on down here." Our new store is opened, one of our new hotels is finished, and our bakery is fast approaching completion. I think there is a good opening here for a steady industrious boot and shoe maker, and I think a blacksmith, who would turn his hand to other work, would manage to make a good living. We have not yet formed a Total Abstinence Society, as those who are well acquainted with us say that it is altogether unnecessary, being already famed far and wide as one of the most temporate districts in Otago. We have, however, a high opinion of the value of cold water (for mining purposes), and intend holding a public meeting for the purpose of devising means for claiming a portion of the Government grant for a goldfields water supply. One thing certain, there is no district where water would be a greater boon, as there would be a field open then for hundreds of miners on each side of the Tuapeka River, which there is little doubt would prove remunerative.

We intend also to go in with you for the railway from Clutha to Tuapeka, on condition that the route will be via Dalhousie.

Our bridge across the Tuapeka will soon be paying the ferry a visit unless the Government sets to work and put a few anchors to it to keep it from drifting away from its moorings.

Our Readings continue to be well attended, and would bear fair comparison with some much larger districts.
