"ONLY A LITTLE GRAVE." BY ST. CLAIB. "Only a little grave," But how many hopes are fled ; "Only a 'little grave," With daiaies around its head. "Only a little grave," But » void that nought can fill ; "Only a little grave," But our hearts are mourning still. "Only a little grave," But a vacant chair forlorn ; Only a golden curl From a marble forehead shorn. "Only a little form," And restless feet at rest ; A little prattling voice That had made our home so blest. " Only a tiny shoe," That has cased the dear little feet ; Only some broken toys, Heaped up on the window seat. Only these. Nothing more Is left of our darling below, The sunbeam God had sent To our hearts three years ago. But oft in the twilight hour, When I sit by my fire in the gloom, I hear the tiny feet Patter, patter about the room. Again I feel the touch Of the clinging warm little hand, And our darling once again Make one in our household band. But careless voices sound, And the dream I dreamt is fled ; Out in the mist and cold Our darling lies with the dead. 'Tis but a little grave, A little mound of mossy greenBut ah ! the tears that still are shed, And ah ! the sorrow that has been.
