THE BIG HILL JOB.
(To the Editor oftlie Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — If 1 am correctly informed, the reducing of the gradients at the two hills on this and the other side of the Beaumont, and the contract for which was advertised lately has again been postponed, the Government considering the lowest tender, £350, Mr. Ayling's, as too high. Now, Mr. Editor, I believe that had tenders for the two hills been advertised for separately, there would have been many more applications for the work, as each would have been a job that could be taken by a party of working men (there being no engineering difficulties to contend with) ; whereas the contract for the two would be too heavy for men of limited means to undertake. Should your paper reach the inner temple of our money spenders, perhaps they may take this hint when advertising for fresh tenders for the above work, and oblige. — I am, &c, One of the Unemployed. Lawrence, August 22, 1870. (To the Editor of the Ttuxpeka Times.) Sir, — I hear that the tenders for the reducing of the two hills between Lawrence and the Teviot have been shelved, because the lowest tender was considered too high for the provincial purse. I am sure there would have been more tenders in for the work had it been let in two contracts, as there is a distance of ten or eleven miles between the two hills, and parties could have taken one contract who would not have been so able to manage the two, as the first, or smaller job, would mainly require manual labour ; whereas the other would require horse teams, and a quantity of took, powder, «&c, for producing metal. — I am, &c, Small Contractor. Lawrence, August 23, 1870
