BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
Wellington, Aug. 24th, 3 p.m. The Government are unfavourable to the immediate construction of a railway to Lawrence. The Goldfields Committee reported yesterday that the consideration of the Mount Benger petition be postponed, and that the Chairman apply to the House for a definition of the powers of that committee in reference to such petition. Mr. Creighton moved to-day that the report of the Goldfields Committee on the Tuapeka Blocks be remitted back to said committee for reconsideration. The squatters are determined to throw out these petitions. Very favourable proposals have been received by the Provincial Government from a Tasmanian firm to construct the Clutha Railway at a 6 per cent, guarantee.
