MAIL COMMUNICATION TO TUAPEKA MOUTH.

We have been favoured with the following correspondence, relative to the establishing of a post office at Tuapeka Mouth and mail communication between Lawrence and that rising district : — Wellington, July 28, 1870. Sir, — I beg to call your attention to the urgent necessity which exists for mail communication being established between Lawrence and Tuapeka Mouth, Province of Otago. There is a population at the Tuapeka Mouth of or about 150 male adults, and they are at the present time dependant on chance for their letters being conveyed to and from Lawrence. I am given to understand that weekly communication can be established with Lawrence at a cost of from £30 to £40 per annum. I am also informed that a petition has been forwarded to you through the Chief Postmaster at Dunedin, Mr. Barr, to a similar effect, and I also understand that the inhabitants of Tuapeka Mouth have suggested that Mr. A. B. Matthews should be appointed Postmaster there, if you should agree to grant the prayer of the petitioners. As the inhabitants of the Tuapeka Mouth are at the present time almost completely shut out from communication with the outer world, and, as I believe no loss will be sustained by the revenue, I hope you will see your way to comply with the wishes of the inhabitants there, and I shall be glad if you can give to this subject your early consideration, as a reply i 3 anxiously expected by the petitioners. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, David H. Mervyn. Hon. Julius Yogel, Postmaster-General . REPLY. General Post Office, Wellington, Aug. 2, 1870. Sir, — I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 28th tilt. , pointing out the necessity for establishing a mail service between Lawrence and Tuapeka Mouth, in accordance with a memorial from the inhabitants of Tuapeka Mouth, and to inform you that I have sanctioned the establishment of a weekly service between those places. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your very obedt. servfc., Julius Yogel, Postmaster-General. David H. Mervyn, Esq., M.H.R.
