LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The Council met on Monday evening, and after passing the minutes of the previous meeting, adjourned till last evening, when they met and transacted business. Present — The Mayor and Crs. Coverlid, Harrop, Mears, and Barnett, The Balance Sheet was read and received. After several questions bearing upon it were asked and satisfactorily answered, it was unanimously adopted. Cr. Mears asked whether in cases where proprietors of sections, who are nonresident, and who have not paid rates for years, the Council can claim the freehold as security for those rates. The Mayor stated that such a thing could not be done ; if, however, a house were erected upon it and furnished, they could then levy the arreas of rates upon it. Cr. Harrop moved with reference to the leases of Municipal sections which had not been lifted, "That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to those parties to lift their leases at once, or the amount would be sued for." Seconded by Cr. Barnett. Cr. Coverlid moved an amendment, " That the Town Clerk inform those parties who have not yet lifted their leases that the sum of 2s a month will i be added to the amount due from the Ist of August." 1 ; Cr. Mears seconded. The amendment was put and carried. An account from T. Driscoll, labour, &c, £3 16s, was referred to Public Works and Finance Committees. j The Mayor stated that when in town lately he induced Mr. Reid, the Secretary for Lands and Works, to reserve that portion of land occupied by the reservoir. Mr. Adams had informed him (the Mayor) that five acres would be reserved. He was glad to intimate that tenders had been called for reducing the gradient of the Beaumont Hill. Cr. Coverlid, in accordance with notice of motion given at previous meeting, moved, " That the Public Works Committee be instructed to prepare specification, and call for tenders for next Council meeting, for the formation of footpath from the culvert in Whitehaven-street to the hospital gate." Cr. Mears seconded. — Carried. Cr. Mears said that as the Government did not intend doing anything towards repairing the footpath in Ross Place, noar Mr. Wootton's house, he would move, " That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the owners of those sections through which the creek runs, where the footpa+h has given way, requesting them to construct, within fourteen days, a retaining wall to preserve the footpath." He found that four feet of the footpath had already fallen away, and it would get worse if some steps were not immediately taken. Cr. Coverlied seconded. — Carried. - Several other motions were mooted, but as they will be brought forward at a future meeting of the Council, we shall report upon them at another time. The Council then adjourned till Monday week.
