EMBEZZLEMENT.
William Henry Cardwell was indicted for having, on the 14th March last, misappropriated the sum of Lll 14s, the property of his late employers, Messrs. Wilson and Birch, brewers, Dunedin. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, and the accused was accordingly discharged.
EMBEZZLEMENT, ETC.
John Creagh, indicted for embezzlement and forgery and uttering, at Dunedin, pleaded guilty to a charge brought against him at the instance of his late employer, Mr. Cook, solicitor ; but he pleaded not guilty to the other charges. Mr. Cook stated that Creagh had been in his employment seven years. He was well-educated, and possessed of considerable legal attainments, and had heldresponsible situations. During the first part of the seven years he was very good, but subsequently he had unfortunately fallen into bad habits, drinking and neglecting his
duties, so that be (Mr. Cook) had to discharge him. His Honour, in^passing sentence, said that he made every allowance for the extenuating circumstances advancing by counsel. The lowest period the statute allowed, was penal servitude for three years, which was the sentence of the Court.
