BALCLUTHA.

(From om owi Cowespoftdjynf.)

The meeting called fprformiug Balclutha into a municipality, lapsed on account of the 15ijh being Good Eriday-rrihe very reason some of ns,^ in our. ignorance, supposed the 15th was fixed upon, it is expected to come off next .week. . The streets and unreclaimed sections in Balclutha have hitherto supplied excellent grazing for many, favourite cpwrS and wandering horses, to th§ .disadvantage and destruction of delapidated fences and cabbage gardens. This very convenient cpmmonage is now sternly inhibited, and a rather awkward batch of owners, were summarily dealt with last court day— even the minister's horse, although tethered,, only escaped the usual fine and costs by our worthy toll-collector declaring he was .only waiting for his master's dinner, and securely fastened to an adjacent post.

Your attention, might have been attracted to an enigmatical advertisement which recently appeared in a Tokomairiro contemporary, signed "John Kane." He has carried his threat into, partial execution, having on Sunday last burnt a hut within fifty yards of his own home, and where his wife lived for some time back. He is now in custody, and doub.tless his reasons for committing this serious act will shortly be made public. Messrs.. Henderson and Thompson failed to command a meeting of their constituents in response to their advertisement convening the same — the reason of this being the unsuitableness of the hour, two p.nu Tea meetings. an,d anniversaries are crowding upon its rather fast, but the promoters maintain it is all for our (rood, and the ladies second; the motion, consequently it must be true,, A course of Sabbath evening lectures has been commenced in the Presbyterian Church, the fiss.t of. which was delivered: on the lfth instant by the Rev. M.r. Bannerman — subject, "The Milennium "— a subject to which the rev._ lecturer must have, devoted much careful attention. The attendance was better than ordinary, and for well nigh two honra Mr. Bannerman was listened to with, unflagging attention. The sixpenny readings meeting last week was a splendid success, and with such a conductor^ as M.r. M'Ew.en, this is not surprising. As secretary he' works with a w,ill an,d a method which ensures success, while l\is services, in the programme are most efficient.
