FOOT-BRIDGE AT EVANS' FLAT
(To-tlm Editor of the Taapeka Timss.)
Sui, — Tt cannot be doubted that the Town Council of Lawreace, by their recompiendation to the Government, can. accomplish much good' for the^, Tuapeka district if they-set themselves to work. I was glad to notice that through their, instrumentality the- Beaumont Hill gradient is to be reduced. There is another public wwrjc of equal importance which tho Council would do good service in agitating :- I- refer to the necessity of a. foot-bridge across the Tuapeka river at Mr. Hopkins's. Th~- mere apology for a bridge which haa existed there for some, time, and which is washed down the river by, every flood, is becoming nothing more or less than a complete nuisance. Tho heavy-floods of Friday and Saturday last carried the bridge about a mije down the river,-, and the settlers in the neighbourhood who haye taken tho trouble on several occasions of carting it to -.its old position are getting tired of tlie operation ; thoy-have cortavnly^doue their part, ajid I think it now becomes the duty rrp'.the Government^ to erect such a bridg^ will stand against the periodical rising^ of the river ;.it-can<be dove at a comparatively small outlay. During the f?a:t' week the settlers and. pedestrians -in general haye-^beon put to great inconvenience _ arid ' expense in getting across the creek, a boy with a horse having found it to be a paying speculation to cross people, who will pay ayy amount rather r than be .delayed in their travels. I tru;t the Town Council will extend; their influence to this matter, and hasten the Government in, the erection of, a per- . ru&acnt bridge. -I*anv&c,
David Evans.
