BALCLUTHA.

(From our own Correspondent.)

Thatcher and party have favoured U3 and themselves by visiting our river city. For three nights Barr's Hall was crowded almost to excess. The "Inimitable" lectured our local celebrities with unspairing rigour — perhaps occasionally with undue severity ; so much so that some have felt the lash, and complain accordingly, remarking that there is neither wit nor humour in his observations. But to my mind it is the presence of these that night after night attracts such a large and mixed multitude. If wit " lurks under an odd similitude — in a sly question or in a quirkish reason ; if it is couched in a tart irony, or in a startling metaphor ; if acute nonsense, or a presumptuous bluntness gives it being ; " then, if you desire wit, go where Thatcher sings to-night.

The Clutha sixpenny readings are recommenced, and promise well. We sure having fortnightly meetings, and abundance of local talent.

The weather of late has been all that could be desired . Thrashing is vigorously conducted, and produce freely offering for sale. Oats, Is. 9d. to 2a. ; wheat, 3s. 6d. to 45. ; barley, 4s. to 4s. 6d. Potatoes are late, but promise well. On Inch Clutha twelve to sixteen tons per acre are calculated upon, while an average return may be safely expected tlmroghout the surrounding districts^

We congratulate you upon your good fortune in having secured such a well known assiduous and untiring representative for County Bruce. Mr. Brown's views and qualifications pre-eminently fit him for the honour conferred upon him ; and 1 am sure you will never regret having made the choice.
