LAWRENCE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was held in the Schoolhouse on Friday evening, the 25th inst. All the members of the committee were present ; and in the absence of the prasident, Mr. Jamison was called to the chair.

The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed.

A letter from Mr. Hislop, with reference to the prize allowance, was read and received.

Mr. Stenhouse stated that up to the present time, Mr. Menzies and Mrs Dale had discharged their duties as teachers faithfully. He might say they were not only willing, but had applied themselves willingly, and believed they would do well if they went on as they had begun.

Some discussion ensued as to whether the trial of the two assistant teachers had been sufficient, after which Mr. Pressly moved that the report, as submitted by Mr. Stenhouse, be received as satisfactory; and that intimation be given the teachers confirming their appointment. Mr. M'Nicholl seconded.

Mr. Harrop moved as amendment that the confirmation of the appointments be deferred till next meeting. Mr. Campbell seconded. The amendment was then put to the meeting, when three hands were ' shown in its favour, while there were four for the original motion. The secretary was . then instructed to acquaint Mrs. Dale and Mr. Menzies of their permanent .appointment. Mr. Harrop moved, and Mr. Campbell seconded, that the contractor be paid the balance of £250. Carried.

A verbal report was given by the Building Committee, after which it was moved, seconded, and carried, that the Building Committee's report be received, and the committee discharged. The secretary stated that a sum of about £50 was due for sundry accounts. Mr. Stenhouse thought that there would be £10 or £15 to the good from the School fees, &c., after paying the teachers salaries. He remarked that the old assets were coming in very slowly. Messrs. M'Kinlay and Jamison were appointed a Financial Committee to devise means for raising funds to meet the liabilities.

A School Visiting Committee, consisting of Messrs. J. Campbell and A. M'Kinlay was appointed. The meeting then adjourned,
