COMMONAGE AT TUAPEKA MOUTH

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — The small cattleowners at Tuapeka Mouth wish to know through your paper if Mr. Smith, ike sqiaartter 13 allowed to herd some thousands of sheep on the few hundreds of acres of commonage set apart for the use of horned cattle at Tuapeka Mouth ; and you will oblige by informing the enquirers what meana they should pursue, if any, to compel Mr. Smith from depasturing his sheep on the common, and eating the whole of the grass at this season ot the year, ttms cie~sfcroying all prospect of feed for the winter. By this course Mr. Smith will compel our cattle to stray on his run ; and the result will be that he will impound our cattle and put us to no end of inconvenience.. We merely ask for what is granted by Government for the use of horned cattle ; and if there is no provision- to compel, sheep from being depastured on the common, then commonage is a farce : and the sooner a striving man seeks for a land, that gives easier facilities for settlement and protection from squatterdom the sooner he will have a home of his own, and be able to enjoy in comfort what he has earned by his own industry. We do. not find fault with Mr. Smith running cattle on the commonage ; but it is well known that sheep and cattle do not agreeon the same place ; and I should have thought Mr. Smith, would have been, satisfied with the thousands of acres of country he holds on both sides of the Tuapeka river without interfering with the small section set apart for the fewpeople who wish to become permanent settlers on the soil. — I am, &c, John Bun. On behalf of cattleowners at Tuapeka* Mouth. [Our correspondent must be aware that there is an Inspecter appointed for the depasturing districts of Tuapeka and Waitahuna. If the sheep referred to are feeding on the commonage set apart for great cattle, all that is necessary to havethe complaint removed is to call the Inspector's attention to the matter. — Ed v
