An interesting couple were united in wedlock by Alderman Hardy, at the Circuit Court, New York, in the presence of a distinguished assemblage. The groom was Frederick Whitton. He was recently under arrest for counterfeiting, but it was shown that he was not so guilty as two or three persons, who were relatives of his. A lady cousin of his, named Bertha Myer, appeared during the examination and complained that he had cruelly deceived her, and that the only reparation he could make was to marry her. Moved by her attractive and lovely appearance, the prosecuting officers proposed that Whitton should accept her as his wife. He consented after they told him that they would stop all proceedings against him in case he did so. Ex-Judge Stuart conducted the ceremony; and after it was performed the groom received an honourable discharge from Commissioner Shields on the complaint for counterfeiting. — "New York Times."

The special correspondent of the " Daily Telegraph " having to say that "it is raining in Rome," does so in this fashion : — " Santa Bibbiana, patroness of goloshes, first cousin to St. Swithin, and directress of the celestial waterworks, has evidently made up her mind this year to convince the incredulous in folk-lore that her pluvious proclivities Hare not become proverbial without very good reasons."
