TUAPEKA v. WAITAHUNA.
The return match between the Tuapeka srad Waitahuna Clubs came off on the cricket ground, Lawrence, on Thursday, when the Tuapeka team were again victorious, the scores standing at the close •of the mateh — Tuapeka, 151 ; Waitahuna, 114. Mr. Downes having won the toss, he sent the Waitahuna men to the wickets. Play commenced about eleven o'clock in the face of a stiff breeze, which continued all day, and which, no doubt, partly accounted for the large number of wides and byes which were scored during the match. Good play was shown on both sides — the Tuapeka men shaping better in the field than on the former occasion, and their invincible Downes was well supported by Buck and Barkman. In the single-wicket match between four of each club which was played after the event of the day, the scoring was as follows : — Waitahuna, 2 ; Tuapeka, 14. The following is the scoring :—: — WAITAHUNA.— FIRST INNINGS. Busst, hit wicket, b Downes - - - 26 Hamilton, run out, b Barkman - - - 1 Drummond, b Downes - - - - 12 S. In the evening between twenty and thirty gentlemen sat down to a really excellent spread at the Shamrock Hotel ; and judging by the rapid disappearance of the good things before them, it was very evident the cricketers fully appreciated Mr. Donovan's taste ; and the neat appearance of the tables, the credit of which was due to Mrs. Donovan, did not pass unobserved. Supper being ended, ,and the glasses
charged, Mr. Downes (captain of the Tuapeka Club), who occupied the chair, said •he had much pleasure in meeting the Waitahuna team. They had had a good match that day, and he hoped to have many more like it, He went down the other night to help to clear the cricket ground, and blistered his hands in so doing, but when the bat was once in his grasp he forgot the blisters, and fought as well as he could for Tuapeka.— (Hear, hear.) He hoped tho Waitahuna team would not be disheartened at their defeat ; it was rather late this season to meet them again, but he hoped to do so next season. He proposed the health of the Waitahuna Club, coupled with the name of Mr. Nation (captain), which was drank with musical honours.
Mr. Nation, who occupied the vicechair, said he regretted they had been beaten this time. However, they had all done their best, and he hoped they_ would be able next season to take the~ ball away from Tuapeka. He sat down amidst great applause.
Mr. Grainger Clark proposed "The Ladies," coupled with the name of Mr. Twigge, which was enthusiastically drank.
Mr. Twigge, in reply, regretted his inability to do justice to so important a toast. While thanking Mr. Clark for having placed him in so truly honourable a position, he would rather that some other and younger gentleman had been chosen to respond to the toast — a toast which, where the sun of civilisation shines, never yet failed to meet with that enthusiastic reception which it so truly deserved. Doubtless there were many present who were eager aspirants to matrimony, and therefore would be as proud as himself to stand as champion of ladye faire. Although matrimony was not the happy haven to which his ambition soared, yet he did not think his worst enemy could repronch him with want of gallantry and attention to the fair sex. Mr. Twigge concluded a long and eloquent speech by again thanking them for the enthusiastic manner in which the toast had been received, and resumed his seat amidst great applause.
Mr. Downes proposed " The Umpires and Scorers ; " they had done their duty in a very efficient manner, and deserved the thanks of both clubs.
Mr. Shaw, in reply, said he for one was glad that they had given satisfaction. He did not think he would have been able to act at all, as he had almost forgotten the game, not having plkyed for years .
Mr M. Higgins proposed "The Host and Hostess," which was received with applause.
Mr. Donovan said he was very glad he had given satisfaction He was proud that Tuapeka had again proved winners. He had never met with such manly antagonists as the Waitahuna Club, who always felt and acted the same either in victory or defeat. He hoped this would not be the last time of feasting the Waitahiina team in the Shamrock Hotel. He begged to return his sincere thanks in behalf of Mrs. Donovan and himself.
Mr. M. Higgins proposed "The Two Captains," which was suitably replied to in both cases.
The Waitahuna team received three hearty cheers from the Tuapeka men on parting.
