LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held in the Chambers on Wednesday evening. Present — Crs. Mears, Coverlid, Harrop, and Walker. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Mears took the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. -

CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter from the Inspector of nuisances, "with reference to the dangerous state of the footpaths in Ross Place and Colonsayetreet. Moved by Cr. Harrop, and seconded by Cr. Walker, that the Public Works Committee should see to it at once. Carried.

The following letter from Messrs. Kenyon and Maddock, Dunedin, was read and received :—: — Dunedin, 2nd February, 1870. William Hayes, Esq., Town Clerk, Lawrence.

Dear Sir, — In reply to your letter of the 29th ult., we have to state that simple detention of cattle found trespassing on the streets of the township would be an impounding within the meaning of the Act and illegal. In further reply, we have to inform yon that we cannot suggest any legal means of detaining cattle with the view of discovering the owners ■or for any other purpose. If the Council were so to detain cattle they would render them.selvesliable to an action ; and although they would probably by detaining them discover the owner, it is for the Council to consider whether the damages to which they might become liable ■would not make such discovery anything but profitable. — We are yours truly, Kenyon and Maddook.
