A sale of Australian diamonds took place on the 6th inst. at the Shipping Exchange, Melbourne. There was a good attendant, and some of the stones (of which there were 81 offered) realised very satisfactory prices, the sums received ranging from £2 2s. to £10 10s. per stone. This is the first sale of the kind that has taken place in Melbourne ; but as the supply of gems bids fair to be pretty constant, it is probable that the sales will now be periodical. The Australian Diamond Company are forwarding 197 diamonds, weighing 51 J carats, to their agent in England, by this mail steamer. This parcel makes a total of 588 despatched from Melbourne since the opening of the mine. A telegram was (on the 7th) received from the manager at Mudgee, stating the result of a week's work as 61 diamonds, and 12oz. 13dwt. 15gr. of gold. — Melbourne paper. Colinne, Utah, Ist November. — J. H. Beadle, editor of the " Utah Eeporter," while attending Probate Court to-day, at Brighain City, was set upon by Mormons, and beaten nearly to death. The cause of the attack is Beadle's writings upon polygamy. The principal assailant is a son of the Probate Judge, who stood looking on at the attempted assassination. Trouble is apprehended tomorrow. St. Louis, Ist November. — An Omaha despatch says that parties from Salt Lake report that several Mormon dignitaries connected with the Zion Co-operative Association have been publicly excommunicated by the Mormon Church, causing considerable excitement among their friends.
