CROMWELL MUNICIPAL MATTERS.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — My attention has been drawn to a paragraph in your Cromwell correspondent's letter, published in your issue of the 15th inst. Your correspondent, "with that entire absence of truth and paltry exhibition of party spirit which usually characterize his contemptible effusions, says, "It would be a godsend to the town and district if Whitter's (sic. ) reign could be brought to an end. The Council, as constituted, is a fair one, but in the hands of Whitter it is something to contemplate." Sir, as a member of the Cromwell community, I wish to state that this is anything but a reflex of public opinion, and in justice to Mr. Whetter I trust you will find room for these few lines. It is well known that the present Mayor and Council have been obstructed in the carrying out of necessary public w*orks by the opposition of the Goodger party, through whose instrumentality the Government has been induced to "withhold the payment of a large amount of subsidy due to the Corporation, thereby placing business at a complete standstill. Mr. Whetter is regarded by the great majority of the community (not including " your own," wlwse interests lie in the oilier direction) as the right man in the right place ; and I sincerely trust that his unmanly calumniators will find that out to their cost ere long. — I am, &c, Fair Play. Cromwell, Jan. 22, 1870.
