THE TUAPEKA AND WAITAHUNA CRICKET MATCH.

The Tuapeka Cricket Club answered the challenge made by the Waitahuna Club on Thursday last, when a remarkably well contested match was played on the ground, at Waitahuna Bridge, the Tuapeka team gaining the victory by three runs. A few showers of rain fell in the early part of the day, and it was feared that the entire day would prove miserably wet ; the clouds, however, presently ceased to weep, although the sun refused to smile, and play was proceeded with in a spirited manner on both sides. Considering the very short time the Tuapeka Club has been in elistence, their play was very creditable ; but any criticism on our part would perhaps be unfair, this being their first match, so we reserve further remarks for a future occasion. The Waitahuna team showed some good fielding during the day, and in this respect proved themselves far superior to their opponents. A single-wicket match was afterwards played between five members of each club, which resulted in a tie. A match between Messrs. Higgins and Donovan was also played, resulting in a victory for the latter-named gentleman, the scores being — Donovan, 4 ; Higgins, 1. In the evening the two teams, with their friends, sat down to a splendid supper, provided by the Waitahuna Club, in the Bridge Hotel. The evening was passed in a most convivial manner, toasts, songs, and speeches going round in quick succession. The party broke up at an early hour, and at their departure the Tuapeka men were heartily cheered by their late opponents. We have been requested by the Tuapeka Club to acknowledge the very handsome treatment received by them. The following are the scores :—: — WAITAHUNA. — IST INNINGS.
