TAPANUI.

(From our Own Correspondent.)

You will be surprised to hear that we have not had a mail from Lawrence from the Ist to the 13th inst. Som3 bungling in the arrangements ha 3 deprived us of our usual weekly mail. I know it caused great inconvenience to not a few, as letters containing " the needful " to meet bills were delivered a week too late. The day of arrival and departure of the mail has also been altered, and the change i 3 decidedly for the worse. Carrying out their false policy of retrenchment, 1 hear the Government purpose reducing the postmaster's allowance. The alteration in the day of mail is very unsuitable for many of the newspapers, and as books are scarce, that kind of literature is greatly appreciated in Tapanui. There is some talk of getting up a petition to get the day altered, but here, as in many other places, people prefer talking to working. The evil, however, is so great, that I believe something will be done. I do not think it would be unreasonable in the district asking for a bi-weekly mail. At present we have considerable correspondence with Clutha Ferry, Waiwera, and Southland, so that letters for places some 20 miles distant are sent 100 before they reach their destination

However bad the floods were "with you, they have almost been equalled in our part of the country. Mr. Dicksou had to leave his house to the mercy of the flood, and his crops have been considerably damaged ; three feet of water stood in the house. Mr. Strenn also had to leave his hotel, and swr his horse some distance before he read ed tjrra firma.
