The Flying Squadron will visit "Wellington on the 20th inst., and Auckland on the Ist of February. We have received the first number of the "Otago and Southland Mining Journal." It has made a good start. Harvesting has commenced in the Tokomairiro district. The recent flood has done very little harm to the crops. Mr. Donald Reid has resigned the office of Acting-Provincial Treasurer, and Mr. Duncan has been appointed innis stead. The tender of Mr. M'Latchie for erecting a public library and reading-room in Tokomairiro has been accepted, the sum being £490. It is in contemplation to erect a "Wesleyan church at Balclutha ; a site has been offered for that purpose by one of the settlers. A bifle match, held on Saturday last bej tween the Bruce and the Oamaru Rifle Companies, resulted in the defeat of the former by 21 points. Owing to numerous alterations in the upcountry mails, there has been only one delivery of letters in Lawrence from Tapanui and Swit_ers during the last fortnight. We are informed that the two newspapers published in Invercargill are now published only bi-weeklp, instead of tri- weekly as hitherto. We fear this does not speak well for the commercial prosperity of Southland. We are informed that the Lawrence Amateur Christy Minstrels have receivelaninvitationfrom the Assembly Room Committee to give an entertainment at Waitahuna! We understand they propose to comply with the invitation. The secretary of the Wetherstones sports committee, Mr. Philip Rheubey, informs us that after paying all expenses connected with the late sports, there remains a balance in hand of £7, which the committee have decided to hold over til] next year. They expressed some dissatisfaction with the manner in which the contract had been executed. Undek date January 11th, Mr. David M'Kenzie, of the Balclutha Hotel, informs ns of the following most singular freak of nature .—". — " I have a cow which gave birth to a strong bull calf on the sth of this month, The cow has a piece off the tip of the off ear, also a slit in the near ear, and the calf was born with exactly the same ear marks." On Monday last, J. Carter, late constable in charge at the Teviot, was brought before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., charged with having misappropriated various sums of money which came ' into his possession as a constable, and when stationed at the Teviot. The hearing lasted over three hours, the evidence being voluminous — too much so to admit of our publishing it. The accused was committed for trial. In our report of the recent floods we omitted to refer to the complete inundation of the two coal pits in the district, but since then we have shared the great inconvenience arising from the scarcity of fuel to which many of the inhabitants have been subjected. Mr. Walker informs us that the process of baling out the water is all but completed, and the pit nearly dry, so that he will be prepared to meet the pressing demands upon him in a day or two. The installation of officers in Court Star of Tuapeka, A.0.F., will take place on Tuesday, 25th inst. At the last Court, Bro. Murray was elected C.R., and Bro. Bennett, for the able and efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties during, the first year of the Court's existence. At the Waste Lands meeting held on Wednesday, the application of Mr. John Mouat, on behalf of the Roman Catholic clergyman, for the purchase of section 2, block V., at Lawrence, was finally considered. It was resolved to open J u he land for sale. The application of Mr. Webster to cut flax on the unsurveyed land in block 11., Table Hill, was granted. The Chief Commissioner was in favour of the public generally being allowed to cut flax on the waste lands, and thought no exclusive right should be given to individuals. We are informed, on reliable authority, that one of Thomson's celebrated road steamers was sometime ago ordered from the patentee and manufacturer by Mr J. L. Gillies, of Tokomairiro, and that by the last English mail that gentleman had information that the steamer is now in course of manufacture, and may bo expected in the course of a few months. It will be recollected that His Honour the Superintendent tent home an order for one of these steamers, but the order not having been authorised by the Executive of the day, Mr Thomson declined to execute it.— "Daily Times."
