Sir, — Permit me to say that I do know my own business, and consider it a part of my business to protest against the partial administration of any law ; and I defy "Mercy" to prove me incorrect when I say the assessment on cattle has been collected- partially, and only partially. In reply to " Mercy's " statement about the inspector only prosecuting those who are trying to "dodge him,"" that individual writes about what he knows nothing of 3 and would show wisdom on his part by not becoming the champion of the inspector. Some eight or ten weoks ago I happened to be in the Commercial Hotel, when I heard Mr. M'Kay threaten to prosecute two persons for not having applied through the Receiver of Gold Revenue, and he further said that it was only through the Board granting an extension of time that saved them from a summons. In conclusion I send you a few out of the many names of persons who have not paid, and are as able to pay the assessment as those who have already paid. You will do me a favour by showing "Mercy " the names, and I am sure he will be convinced that he is not in a position to give an unqualified denial to the statements in my last letter. — I am, &c, " Equity.
