TAPANUI RACES.
Notwithstanding the threatening appearance of the weather on Thursday, Friday morning turned out bright and beautiful, and our fine course, after the improvements of Mr. Ralph Allan, was in splendid condition. The first event of the day was the Maiden Plate, of 15 soys.., Smith's Lilly Daly (Owner) 1 Pollock's Topsy (Owner 2 Hewitt's Young Dutchess (C. Hewitt 3 Button's Miss Fleet (Laverty 0 Henry's Fairy Queen (Bonner 0 This race was keenly contested, the Fairy making the running, but was quickly overhauled by Lilly and Young Dutchess, and after a severe struggle between the two ladies for honours, victory crowned Miss Lilly. A protest was entered against her jockey for jostling, but was not sustained by the Stewards. Tapanui Town Plate, of 25 soys., Andrew's Magenta (Laverty) 1 Pollock's Penelope (Davis) 2 Williams' Alice (C. Hewitt) 0 Gilbert's Riifus (Pine) 0 Perry's Wild Harry (Smith) 0 For this race the best horses in the district were on the ground, and a most exciting race it was, but the old favourite, Magenta, came in first, Penelope a fine second. Hurdle Race, of 15 soys., Williams' Fire-Eater (T. Hewitt) 1 Eskdale's Blackbird (Smith) 2 Bonar's Brewer (Bonar) 0 Shortly after the start the Brewer (not the "Black Horse") was nowhere, and the race was keenly contested between" the Blackbird and the Fire-Eater, and before taking the last hurdle a few notes changed hands, but in spite of the fine riding of Smith, Hewitt handled our old favourite so well that he came in winner. Handicap Trotting Race, of 15 soys., Bastings' Tommy ' (Owner) Hewitt's Young King (Cowie) Logan's Violet (Scott) Pollock's Long-back (Laverty) For this race Tommy was the favourite, but Young King with a handicap at the Beaumont having beat him, was anxiously looked upon by our sporting circle to do something, but his rider, having jiimped off before coming to weigh, was disqualified, and the stakes were awarded to Violet, a fine third. Consolation Stakes, of 10 soys., Hutton's Miss Fleet (Smith) 1 Williams' Alice (C. Hewitt) 2 Pollock's Penelope (M'Coll) 0 Perry's Wild Harry (Bonar) 0 Henry's Fairy Queen (Aitken) 0 This was a splendid affair, being a regular life and death struggle between Smith and Hewitt, both of whose horsemanship elicited warm remarks of applause, but our particularly graceful rider, Smith, gained the victory. Our sports were well contested, and our old favourites, Perry, Rogers, Croaker, Edwards, North, and Smith, maintained their usual dignities. . In conclusion, we had a Hurry Scurry Race, of 10 soys., for which were entered — M'Alaster's Duffer Logan's Louisa Hewitt's Beeswing Scott's Mazapa Howat's Butcher Henry's Paddy Dr. M'Lauchlan's Dandy Dan's Catch Me If You Can. This race was for mile heats, Paddy and Beeswing gaining alternately the first and second heats. The last heat being between Beeswing and Paddy (both good horses), was exciting, but poor Paddy had drop his colours to Beeswing.
