TUAPEKA HOSPITAL.

(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.) Sir, — I was surprised to read in your isstie of last -week such a scurrilous letter from one signing himself "A Subscriber" to the Tuapeka Hospital, and I was also as much surprised to think you would lend the columns of your paper to such a vindictive wretch to vent his long-pent spleen. It is known that the late warder of the Hospital discharged his duties not only to the best of hia ability, but -well, and to the satisfaction of all ; in fact, so much so that there is every probability that the trouble which, in a moment, cut him off from active life, was hastened by his very anxiety to perform his duties. I knowfpr a fact that the warder in leaving the Hospital, after his partial recovery, was most anxious to pay for attendance, &c, during the time of his sickness, and I feel certain had such payment been taken by the authorities, the voice of the public would have been raised very loiidly against them.

A gift of £25 to any servant who had faithfully filled a position of trust for seven years is no more than any employer would give withoivt a grudge, and public institutions are deservedly respected for granting small annuities to their superannuated servants. I therefore quite agree with the action taken by the two members of the Hospital Committee, whoever they may be, and I feel confident their conduct will meet the approval of their fellow workers, and the public at large.

I think I am safe in prophesying that it will be a long time before " A Subscriber " will find two men who will show any anxiety for his relief in time of trouble, and on that account I sincerely trust that he is " well in," and not likely to require the kind assistance of friends. — I am,

&c, Another Subscriber. Lawrence, December 23.
