The importance of encouraging the introduction of a hardy and sound breed of horses in a country where the means of conveyance are limited, can with, difficulty be exaggerated. In Otago it is indeed a question of greater, moment than many which attract a much larger share of public attention. The physical features of the country forbid the formation of a general railway system, and there is every reason to believe that for many years to come the up-country districts will continue to depend on horse carriage for their intercourse with the sea coast. As a natural result of this, we find that these districts afford more liberal support to race meetings than other parts of the province. * Every little township has its' annual or biennial meeting, where handsome prizes are competed for by local horses. Unfortunately, this liberality has been prevented -from producing as muchgood as might have been expected , by the great popularity of handicap racing. Weight, for age races may j be said to be almost unknown a-, mongst us, although it is notorious ' that only by such contests can we arrive at a fair estimate of the capabilities of different horses.
