AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS.
A gang of false coiners have been arrested at Collingwood. Their apparatus and a quantity of base silver coin were seized. Two men, named Joseph Brooks and John Wilson, alias Garnet, are in custody on a charge of coining. Power, the bushranger, has committed a fresh robbery, and the Government offe* a reward of £300 for his apprehension. Mr. Jones has moved his resolutions affirming the desirability of a reduction in the railway passenger rates, and the running of third-class trains at the rate of Id. per mile. The Government have received tenders by the English mail for the mail service by the Cape of Good Hope. Mr. William Wood, who lately arrived in Melbourne from .New Zealand, has attempted to commit suicide. Captain Kerr, of the Victoria Tower, has been presented with an illuminated address signed by 60 of the principal merchants in Melbourne. , Sydney. Denis, Patrick, M'Kinlay, Rogers, O'Brien, and Shaw, who were charged with fraud, have been found guilty, and remanded for sentence. Captain Shaw was tried on a charge of burning the Snowbird, but the jury were unable to agree, and he was discharged. Mr. Clark, of the Varities, has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment for manslaughter, and Mason to one year's imprisonment, for the same offence. Palmer and Williams have been convicted of the murder of Mr. Halligan near Kockhampton, and have been sentenced to be hanged. Palmer made a full confession. Mr. Lingfoid, Treasurer to the Oddfellows' Society, Sydney, has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzlement. , Adelaide. The subject of the periodic sales of wool in London has been discussed by the Chamber of Commerce, and a Committee appointed to act in concert with the other colonies, with a view to originate a change in the present system.
The Dunstan Jockey Club have issued the prospectus of their annual races, which tack place on the 24th and 25th February, 1870. The prizes offered include a plate of 150 soys , a handicap of 120 soys, with a" sweepstake of 5 soys. added, two prizes of 75 soys,, one of 50 'fiovs, and several of smaller amounts. Alto* gether, the Tuapeka Jockey Club will have to work hard to sustain the prestige of the Lawtence meeting.
