BLUE SPUR MINING NOTES.
(From our Mining Correspondent),
Such a long season of drought has not been experienced for several years past, until on Monday afternoon last, the 15th" instant, when we ' were gratified by a welcome thunder-storm. The grass on our surrounding hills had the appearance of being completely burnt up ; the few dairy cattle. the miners are possessed '. of w.ei£ commencing to, roam about like goats ; and as, a last resort the flax was . Tsery often freezed on by the -cattle, being ■ the greenest and highest vegetation they could grapple with, conveniently. The scarcity of water, for domestic purposed was severely felt by the inhabitants of the • south end of the. spur, in consequence of Wilkinson's wirier 4 :race being, diverted from its- original course by Johns and Co.j, enable_tb.em,,Jb9 jrqrk their claim tp , greater, advantage.' :,-The water races are - well Bupplied cbnsideiing the long drbughjfc ■ i - vte -hiive experienced j are paving weli * \ At' present thereis.little to chronicle in ( ingoing* matters!. ! difficulty I have managed to gather these few notes. The Great Extended fired a blast, which was a great success. The charge consisted of SOcwt.of powder. This "company have had some very hard bars of cement to contend with, in order to give them a much deeper face. This blast will lead them into Al cement.
The Perseverance Co. fired U blast, something over a ton; of powder. This blast .was a little short of Black Jack. It is expected to be 4 a pretty good one when the water commences to bear upon it. A fifth share in Johns and Co.'s claim changed hands lately for the sum of £270. Mr. Carey was the purchaser. Mills and Co. are blasting and pounding up the false bottom, which haa the appearance of being welLghiedjon the mam reef by some chemical agency ; but it is a process that has to be adopted to extract the metal from this conglomerated substance.
