(Condensed from the " Daily Timo3.")

On Tuesday, Mr Mervyn, M.H.R., and Mr Ireland, waited upon His Honour the Superintendent, in Dunedin, as a deputation from the residents of Mount Benger, to request the withdrawal of the Island Block from sale, and have it thrown open under the leasing system, as originally gazetted. The deputation was introduced by Mr Hughes.

His Honour then read the memorial, signed by 171 of the residents of the Mount Benger district, -which, had been forwarded io him. on the previous week. The memorial, which appeared in our issue of the 30th Octoberyset forth, in a very fair manner, the serious objections the inhabitants of the district had to the land being thrown open for sale.

Mr Mervyn, in stating the case, referxed His Honour to the " Gazette 1 ' respect- ''< ing the throwing open of the land, and said that, previous to the action which had been, very recently taken by the^ present Government, all laud thrown open on the Goldffelds was done so in the way advocated, via., under the leasing system, and it always had been understood that such land would be thrown open, under that system. He, in faci,, desired to show there had been a conY tract to that effect j he put in the Government " Gazette" as corroborative evidence, and referred to certain corres-( pondence which had taken place between the Government and would-be applicants! for various portions of. the land. •' He read c letter which he stated was addressed by' the Clerk of -fclte^Execuiive Council, dated 14th April, 1869y- in answer to a letter ■to His Honour the Superintendent dated' 7th April.;, which correspondence, he pointed out, referred to certain alterations in regard to survey that might be deemed necessary to the interests of the parties
