TAPANUI.

(From our Own Correspondent. )

You will be glad to learn that another kind of amusement has been afforded to the inhabitants of Tapanui in the shape of Sixpenny Readings. The first of these took place last Thursday evening, and proved a complete success. The Rev. James Uric filled the chair, and, after his onening remarks, Mi*. Neish was called upon to state the reasons that induced the Mutual Improvement Society to bring this kind of entertainment before the public. He stated the chief reason was that the members of the Mutual Improvement Society, having felt the benefit of their private readings, were desirous of giving the public the same enjoyment. The squatters aroun^, who had been asked to attend, kind y and cheerfully gave their assistanc , which added greatly to the evening's Pnjoy inent. As the mutnals have not decided what to do with the proceeds, but have thought of giving them to the library, I may express my opinion that we might add greatly to our stock of books in this way. After a wellselected programme had been gone through, the meetinp; broke up, every one highly delighted with the evening's entertainment. I regret to say that the strong wind last week has done considerable dam, age to the Waikaka Uace'^Jompany. The flume that has cost sa joft&ph time and labour being the scene tf£ .the mishap — the staging for a considerable distance having been cons~ide"abiy~ damaged. The weather is now beautiful, and things look well.
