On Monday, the 13th instant, a meeting of cattleowners was held in Gormley's Grolden Age Hotel, Waipori, for the purpose of considering the necessity of petitioning the Grovernment for an extension of the commonage near Waipori ; and also the desi- ! rability of having a board of wardens [ appointed and legally constituted to manage the commonage. The meeting was well attended. Mr. Ritchie occupied the chair. After stating the object of the meeting, he called upon Mr. Macledowney, who moved the following; resolution: — "That a petition be forwarded to the G-overnment setting forth the necessity for a Board of Wardens being elected for the Waipori depasturing district." The resolution was seconded by Mr. Dimond and carried. Mr. T. G-ormley then proposed, and Mr. Manly seconded, " That a deputation be appointed to wait upon the G-overnment, to lay the claim of the Waipori cattleowners before them ; and also to wait upon Mr. Fulton, to enquire upon what terms he would be prepared to deal with the G-overnment for part &f his run (No. 259)." — Carried. Proposed by Mr. W. O'Brien, and seconded by Mr. John Page, "That the boundaries of the proposed «xten- . sion of commonage be up the Waipori to Stoney Creek ; thence to the Lainmerlaw range ; thence to the head of North-west Creek ; and thence to the junction of the Waipori river." Mr. Manly moved, as an amendment, which was seconded by Mr. Crowley, " That the eastern -boundary extend from the head of North-west Creek to the lower crossing of the Waipori, and to pass the place known as the " cave," on the Dunedin road ; thence to the lower crossing of the { Waipori river." The amendment was i carried. It was then moved by Mr. Farrant, and seconded by Mr. Wm. Cox senr., "That a deputation .of tlir.ee persons wait upon the Superintendent, to lay
the above resolutions before him, and use their best endeavours to carry out the wishes of the cattTeowners<Rn"fl tie" inhabitants generally ; also that said deputation negotiate with Mr. Fulton^ to ascertaiu upon what terms he would part with the portion of Jus run,specilied in the proposed boundaries." — Carried. , , Mr. Far-rant proposed, and Mr. A. Eobertson seconded, " That the deputation consist of Messrs. Ritchie", Macledowney, and G-orinJey." — Carried. Proposed by Mr. Dimond^and seconded by Mr. Lees, " That, to defray the expenses of the deputation to Dunedin, the cattlcowners be assessed according to their respective number of cattle."— Carried. With, the usual note of thanks to the chairman the meeting terminated.
