THE LAWRENCE CEMETERY.
(To the Editor of the Tuapeka Times.)
Sir, — The Trustees of the Lawrence Cemetery (minus Mr. Mouat, who, with the most consumate good taste, some time since resigned) have rendered themselves obnoxious to the inhabitants of this place by persisting to hold oflice despite the fact that they have, by their negligence and utter disregard for the business entrusted to them, proved themselves thoroughly incompetent to manage the Cemetery. 1 I was not a little annoyed yesterday to find that cattle have recently been permitted to enter the enclosure, and to eat off the flowers and shrubs planted by myself and others upon a spot which I choose to hold sacred, despite the negligence of the Trustees ; and what I complain of in my ovv n case applies to many others. The havoc made by the cattle which are allowed to depasture in the Cemetery being general. Ido not know what Messrs. Bastings, Herbert, and Donovan may think of the matter, but my opinion is that they are dogs in the manger — they will not see to tho matter themselves, neither will they allow others to da it. They have been requested to resign, and have refused to do so ; they have received a large amount of money, and have allowed it to lay idle in the bank ; they have suffered desecration to go on unchecked, and when an offer has been made to them to relieve them of their trust, they have stuck up their backs and refused to resign. In any other country they would be hooted for allowing the Cemetery to be in the state that it is. As it regards the Gavernment allowing them to continue in office after such neglect, I can only say that to my mind it is disgraceful to the last degree. A sense of shame at all events should induce these gentlemen either to resign or at once to inaugurate a much-needed reform. If Government had the pluck to do its duty, it would bid the present Trustees " Begone for a set of dogs, and make room for better men." — I am, &c.
John L. Shadwell Keek.
