(Before W. L. Simpson, Esq., R.M., and

Alex, Stewart, Esq., J.P.)

Monday, August 30th.

"Walsh v. Brougli. — Adjourned for fourteen days. Meyer v. Vause. — No appearance. Case dismissed.

Police v. Patrick Scott. — Constable Purdue of Tapanui charged Scott with being a vagrant, under the Vagrancy Act. It was proved to the satisfaction of the Court that Scott was an incorrigible subject ; that he was formerly sentenced by Mr. Nugent Wood at kTapanui, and underwent his sentence in Dunedin. He was therefore sent to Dunedin for three months, to work on Bell Hill. This was the coolest subject in the dock that ever your reporter saw. On being asked what he pleaded, he said nothing, but turned up his eyes and had a survey of the roof of the Court, beating time the while with his foot. On being asked again, he said he pleaded nothing. On being asked his age, he answered that he could not tell. On being asked his country, he gave some outlandish name. On being further asked what places he had been to, he answered, " I 'don't know; — many places."- And on his being finally asked if he was a miner, he answered that he did not know.
