WAITAHUNA.
(From our Own Correspondent.)
July 27th. On Monday, July 26th, a crowded house witnessed the entertainment by our local Christy Minstrel band. Their ebony complexions were brought out in strong relief by a snow-white back ground, and their make-up was excellent. Baylis, as " Bones," Devonshire, as "Tony," Pennel,as "Sambo," and Dr. Johnson, as "Snowball," were very good, and would not have disgraced the original Christy's band. The nigger conversation, or " patter," was a running fire of sparkling wit, and the local conundrums first-class — to Mr. Alexander Garden is the credit due for a couple of the best. The various songs were very well rendered, and the choruses sounded better than any I have heard from the Glee Club. Some heavy raps were given to most of the big guns in the neighbourhood, The band of minstrels consists of seven, and I fancy there would not be much trouble in persuading them to give an entertainment for a benevolent purpose, After the performance was over, dancing commenced, and some of the coloured gents were so anxious to commence that they would not give themselves time to wash and dress, but danced in ike nigger costume. I believe every one was well pleased with, the entertainment, July 28th. Last nigiat the Assembly Eoom was again the scene of a numerous gathering of Terpsiohorean votaries, when advantage was taken of a ball to present Mr, "William Fry with a silver English lever hunting' watch, to
mark the appreciationX of the services of said gentleman a*» teacher or class-master for the past six months. The watch is an English lever, jewelled in six holes, and with appendages, valued at about £9. This testimonial was presented, on behalf of the class, by Mr. James Cromley, who, in a neat and appropriate speech, did hoWur to the abilities of Mr. Fry as class-master. Mr. Fry briefly returned thanks. A vote of thanks to the ladies was carried unanimously for the pleasure of their "attendance throughout the quartern
